Former President Barack Obama connected the high price of foreign policy to the domestic ballot in Ohio on Saturday. Speaking at a rally to support state Democratic candidates, he argued that voters must reject a war he called unnecessary and a campaign style he described as lacking standards.

Obama placed a $2 trillion price tag on the United States' conflict with Iran. He stated that President Donald Trump started this war against the wishes of the American public. The former president characterized the current administration's two-year record as a period of chaos and corruption that has not been seen in the modern era.

The speech also targeted the Ohio gubernatorial race between Democrat Amy Acton and Republican Vivek Ramaswamy. Ramaswamy recently aired an attack ad featuring Acton's mother, Donna Arthur, who disputes her daughter's account of childhood homelessness and sexual abuse. Acton has said she has not seen her mother since 1978. Her brother supports her version of events, and her stepfather, who died in 2004, was charged with rape.

Obama defended Acton, noting that she spoke movingly about her experiences with abuse and neglect. He criticized Ramaswamy for sinking to a low level of behavior by releasing the advertisement. The former president shared the stage with Acton and former Senator Sherrod Brown, who is seeking to defeat incumbent Republican Senator Jon Husted.

Current polls show Democrats holding a slight lead in both the governor and Senate races. Analysts expect the final results to be close, making the statewide vote a critical test for the party's midterm strategy.
