Five days after being struck by a vehicle, independent MP Helen Haines has been moved out of critical care at Alfred Hospital in Melbourne. The medical team upgraded her condition to serious but stable on Saturday morning, marking the first positive update since she was airlifted from the scene on Monday.

Haines, 65, was deliberately hit by a Toyota LandCruiser outside her electorate office in Wangaratta. The impact required surgeons to amputate both of her legs. Her husband, Phil Haines, described the event as a "horrendous incident" on Wednesday. He noted that while her physical injuries are severe, her "heart and her mind" remain "in good shape."

Brendan Nugent, 43, was arrested shortly after the collision. He faces three charges, including dangerous driving causing serious injury and intentionally causing serious injury. A third charge involves causing harm to a Commonwealth public official. Police indicate that additional charges, potentially including attempted murder, may be added. Nugent's defense attorney cited "mental health concerns" for the suspect during court appearances but provided no specific details.

Victoria Police, supported by the Australian Federal Police, continue to investigate the motive. Investigators are examining whether drug use or medication influenced the driver's behavior. Nugent's family stated they had a long friendship with Haines. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese recently commented on the incident, citing a "rise in temperature" and excessive shouting in public discourse.

Haines entered parliament in 2019 after working as a nurse and midwife. She is recognized for advocating for stronger climate action policies.
