Boston Police arrested Jason Jones, 39, on Wednesday evening in connection with the death of a 66-year-old neighbor. Jones was taken into custody by homicide detectives at approximately 8:36 p.m. near 1900 Dorchester Ave. Officers executed a warrant issued by Dorchester District Court earlier that day.
Police allege that Jones punched Stephen Barrett outside 1931 Dorchester Ave. on Feb. 10. The blow caused Barrett to fall backward, striking his head on the pavement. Officers arrived at the scene around 8:41 p.m. after a report of an unconscious man. They found Barrett unresponsive while Boston firefighters performed CPR.
Boston EMS transported Barrett to a hospital. He died from his injuries on Feb. 17, seven days after the initial assault. Police conducted an eight-month investigation before identifying Jones as the suspect and securing the arrest warrant. He now faces charges of manslaughter and assault and battery on a person age 60 or older or disabled.
Jones is expected to appear in Dorchester District Court for arraignment. Investigators say the case remains open and are asking the public for assistance.
