Three suspects remain at large after witnesses saw them climb into the Queens sewer system through an open manhole on Wednesday night. The incident occurred near 60th Street and 43rd Avenue in Woodside, according to the NYPD.

A 911 call reported the trespass at approximately 10:22 p.m. on Oct. 28. Officers from the 108th Precinct responded to the scene. A witness told police that the three individuals removed the street hole cover and descended into the sewers.

The NYPD’s Emergency Service Unit arrived but did not enter the underground system. The Department of Environmental Protection was notified, and a crew from its Bureau of Water and Sewer Operations joined the response. Police established a crime scene and are canvassing the area for video evidence to identify the suspects.

Authorities have not confirmed if the group caused damage to the infrastructure or encountered hazards underground. The investigation is ongoing. The city has seen a rise in people entering and exiting manholes this year. On Oct. 11, three men were observed diving into a manhole in Manhattan’s Hamilton Heights neighborhood.

Police stated they do not believe the underground activity poses security risks to the public. However, they have not confirmed exactly why these individuals are entering the sewers. The term “mole men” has been used to describe this recent phenomenon.
