Apple has set the price of the iPhone Duo, its first folding smartphone, at $1,999. The device enters a market defined by Samsung, which introduced the Galaxy Fold seven years ago. Apple spent that gap refining the hardware in private, and the result is a device that Wired describes as a "pretty dang good foldable." The high cost and specific design choices require buyers to understand several operational details before purchase.

The software experience presents immediate challenges. The Duo features a 5.4-inch outer screen and a 7.6-inch inner display, a form factor new to Apple. Many third-party applications have not yet been optimized for these dimensions. Apps such as Slack, Instagram, DoorDash, and WhatsApp have received updates for iOS 27.1, but some still display interface errors. Unoptimized apps appear as a narrow vertical strip with black bars on the sides. Apple has also moved navigation elements to the right rail instead of the bottom center. Since the phone is back-ordered for several weeks, developers may complete updates before many customers receive their devices.

The hardware design marks a departure from recent iPhone models. The Duo lacks Face ID, instead using a Touch ID sensor on the right side. This is the first return of fingerprint authentication on a flagship iPhone, though it has remained on the iPhone SE, iPads, and MacBooks. The Dynamic Island is located at the top-right edge of the outer selfie camera. It also appears in the same corner on the inner display during live activities.

Accessories require adjustment for the new form factor. The phone supports MagSafe, but its uneven weight distribution causes it to tip when attached to car docks or tripods. Third-party makers may need to develop anti-rotation magnets. Magnetic wallets stick out past the bottom edge because the Duo is shorter than other iPhones, and Apple has not provided an official fix.

Photography and multitasking offer new capabilities. Users can take selfies using the rear cameras while previewing on the outer screen. A "Slide to show camera" control moves the full camera app to the outer display. For multitasking, users can drag an app to the side of the inner screen to run two apps side by side. Tapping the middle bar locks these two apps as a pair in the Recent apps menu, though they cannot be saved as a single icon.

Maintenance costs for the inner display are high. Apple states that the matte nano-texture finish is an "integral" component and warns users not to remove it. A damaged finish costs $19 to replace with AppleCare+ or $49 out of warranty. A cracked inner display costs $999 without AppleCare+.

Future software updates will add further features. A later update this year will introduce Reachability for the wide display and support for the USB-C Apple Pencil. The keyboard can already be split to ease typing. No storage slot exists for the stylus on the phone.
