Kentucky sits at No. 1 in the Week 9 college football resume rankings. The Wildcats hold this top position despite having only one win against an AP poll ranked team. Their single ranked victory came against LSU.
The new rankings prioritize the quality of opponents using a specific formula. This approach reveals a deeper strength in Kentucky's schedule that the AP poll alone misses. The team holds road victories over Texas A&M, South Carolina, and Oklahoma. All three of these opponents are rated in the top 30 by the CFB Metrics Consensus.
The CFB Metrics Consensus combines ten different power ratings into one metric. This single score serves as the baseline for the weekly resume rankings. By using a consensus rating, the system aims to remove biases found in any single power rating. This method gives Kentucky a clear edge over No. 2 UCLA.
Texas also benefits from this new evaluation method. The Longhorns currently hold two losses but have climbed to No. 5 in the rankings. Their recent victory over Ole Miss is weighted heavily in their favor. While Ole Miss is No. 12 in the AP poll, the CFB Metrics Consensus rates the Rebels at No. 9. Texas also defeated No. 1 Ohio State and secured a road win against No. 11 Texas.
The ranking system uses a formula inspired by the NCAA's Wins Above Bubble metric from college basketball. It measures the likelihood that the average No. 25 team would win a specific game. On a neutral field, the No. 25 team beats the No. 26 team about 51% of the time. Therefore, a neutral site win over a No. 26 opponent adds 0.49 to a team's resume score.
Road victories carry more weight than home wins in this calculation. Auburn gained 0.91 points to its resume score from its win at No. 4 Georgia. This high value reflects that the average No. 25 team would win that game only 9% of the time. The formula rewards teams for overcoming stronger opponents on difficult road trips.
