Mbappe's Ballon d'Or Case: Individual Records vs. Trophy Drought
Kylian Mbappe enters Monday's London ceremony as an underdog, relying on a record 22 World Cup goals to offset a season where Real Madrid and France won no major prizes.

Kylian Mbappe arrives at Monday's Ballon d'Or ceremony in London without a single major trophy from the 2025-26 season. The award carries no cash prize, but it elevates a player's market value and status. Despite lacking silverware, Mbappe has aggressively promoted his candidacy, citing a set of individual records that he believes finally justify the honor.
His strongest evidence comes from the 2026 World Cup in North America. Mbappe secured the Golden Boot for the second consecutive tournament and became the all-time leading scorer in World Cup history. He finished with 22 goals in 22 matches, surpassing Lionel Messi, who stands second with 21, and Miroslav Klose, who is third with 16. Speaking last month, Mbappe noted that overtaking legends in the sport's most important tournament is a standout achievement. When asked whom he would vote for, he answered, 'Myself.'
His club performance supports this narrative. The former PSG forward led La Liga with 25 goals and topped the Champions League scoring charts with 15. He stated that being the top scorer in all major competitions makes for a strong case. However, his team's results were mixed. Real Madrid finished second in La Liga and exited the Champions League in the quarterfinals against Bayern Munich. This extends their trophyless run to two straight seasons. France also underperformed, finishing fourth at the World Cup after losses to Spain in the semifinals and England in the third-place playoff.
The voting field includes players with stronger trophy counts. Lamine Yamal won the World Cup with Spain and La Liga with Barcelona. Harry Kane collected three trophies last term, including the Bundesliga title. Despite this, Mbappe remains focused on individual impact. Telling radio station RFI, he said the award recognizes a player, not a team. Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho also voiced support, stating that the player who made history this summer is not from PSG or the Spanish national team.
Historical trends complicate Mbappe's bid. Every Ballon d'Or winner over the past decade lifted at least one trophy in the award year. Ousmane Dembele won in 2025 after helping Paris Saint-Germain secure their first Champions League title. Rodri won two years ago after claiming Euro 2024 and the Premier League. The last player to win without a major trophy was Cristiano Ronaldo in 2013, who broke Lionel Messi's four-year streak after scoring 66 goals for club and country.
The 2013 precedent offers a slim path for Mbappe. Ronaldo's Real Madrid team also finished as league runners-up that year. After nine nominations and a third-place finish in 2023, Mbappe's supporters argue his moment is long overdue. The ceremony will determine whether individual statistics can once again outweigh team success in the final tally.
