Two goals from Nicolas Jackson were sufficient to end Manchester City's flawless start to the Premier League season, as the visitors fell 2-1 at Aston Villa. The result marks the first defeat for the champions under manager Enzo Maresca and extends a difficult trend at this specific stadium.

City had previously set a record by winning their first seven Premier League matches under a new manager. However, the team has now lost in each of the last four seasons at Villa Park. The defeat came despite City controlling much of the possession, as they struggled to break down a resilient defensive structure.

The match began with a quick setback for the visitors. Just six minutes into the game, a heavy touch from Marc Guehi allowed Jackson to gain possession. He cut inside defender Elliott Anderson and fired a high shot past goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma to give Villa the lead.

For the remainder of the first half, City dominated the play but faced stiff resistance from Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki. Attempts from Iliman Ndiaye, Rayan Cherki, and Abdukodir Khusanov were all denied, and Ndiaye also struck the post. The defensive solidity held until the start of the second half.

City finally equalized in the 52nd minute. Erling Haaland powered in a header from a cross by Ndiaye, marking his 13th goal in ten appearances this season. Shortly after, Josko Gvardiol had a chance to take the lead, but his fierce drive was turned onto the crossbar by Suzuki.

Villa responded on the hour mark to retake the lead. Ibrahim Mbaye was played in behind the City defense and crossed for Jackson. His low shot found the net, an effort that should have been saved by Donnarumma. City pushed for an equalizer in the remaining time but could not find a way past the Villa backline.

The result has significant implications for the league standings. Arsenal has the opportunity to move level on points with City at the top of the table if they defeat Everton at home later on Saturday. For Villa, the win is their sixth in seven games across all competitions, lifting them to sixth place in the standings.

The victory highlights the progress made by manager Unai Emery since his arrival four years ago. He has transformed the club from a sleeping giant into a Champions League participant. This success comes despite losing much of the core squad that won last season's Europa League, as six starters departed during the transfer window.

The summer signings, including Jackson, Suzuki, Mbaye, and Johan Manzambi, are already yielding results after a slow start to the campaign. The win also provides a distraction for City, who are appealing a guilty verdict on over 100 charges of breaking financial rules between 2009 and 2018. While the potential sanctions, including relegation, have not visibly affected the players, two sloppy defensive errors proved costly at Villa Park.
