Michael Mann stepped out of a Los Angeles medical facility on Tuesday, using crutches to move after a shooting accident at a local gun range. The 83-year-old director was photographed leaving what appeared to be an orthopedic surgeon's office on the city's Westside.
He wore a plain black T-shirt under a black zip-up hoodie, white pants, and black square-frame eyeglasses. His left foot was encased in a cast, and he wore a black orthopedic boot on the other foot.
The incident occurred around 4 p.m. on Saturday, October 31, at The Range LA. Mann was undergoing firearm training when the weapon discharged while he attempted to holster it. The bullet struck his leg. Paramedics transported him via ambulance to a hospital for treatment.
The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed to TMZ that the shooting happened during a training session. Mann's representatives later told Page Six that the injury was superficial. They stated he was expected to be released from the hospital soon, which aligns with his public appearance on Tuesday.
One source described Mann as an experienced target shooter who has practiced the sport for decades. The Range LA is a members-only club. Annual memberships for the facility cost between $2,000 and $5,400.
Mann has worked in the entertainment industry since the 1960s. He is best known for directing the 1995 crime drama Heat. That film starred Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, and Val Kilmer. He also directed The Insider in 1999, which reunited him with Pacino and featured Russell Crowe and Christopher Plummer.
He is currently in pre-production on Heat 2. Leonardo DiCaprio and Christian Bale are set to star in the sequel. Pacino and De Niro are rumored to appear in the project. Filming is reportedly scheduled to begin in January. Mann has been married to art director Summer Mann since 1974, and the couple has four children.
