A powerful nor'easter began taking shape on October 28, 1991, hundreds of miles east of Nova Scotia. This weather system later became known as The Perfect Storm. It merged with a tropical storm and a second nor'easter to create a massive low-pressure system in the Atlantic Ocean.
The storm directly impacted the Andrea Gail, a 70-foot fishing boat out of Gloucester, Massachusetts. The vessel was working in the North Atlantic when it encountered the rough seas. All six crew members were lost at sea during the event.
This date marks the 301st day of 2026. There are 64 days remaining in the current year. The anniversary serves as a reminder of the specific maritime disaster that defined this calendar day in the early 1990s.

In 1962, Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev informed the United States that he ordered the dismantling of missile bases in Cuba. The U.S. secretly agreed to remove nuclear missiles from Turkey in return. This exchange ended the Cuban missile crisis.
More recently, in 2024, the Pentagon revealed that North Korea sent about 10,000 troops to Russia. These soldiers were sent to train and likely fight against Ukraine. In 2022, Paul Pelosi, the 82-year-old husband of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, was severely beaten at their San Francisco home. Nancy Pelosi stepped down as speaker in the following Congress.
