Spotify is enforcing a seven-day deadline for Duo and Family plan members to verify their presence in person.

The company introduced the requirement as part of a stricter review of existing subscription rules. Under the new policy, each member must scan a QR code displayed on the plan manager's device. The code serves as a check that the user is physically located with the primary account holder. This step confirms adherence to the long-standing rule that all members of a shared plan reside at the same address.

Spotify first detailed the process in its support documentation. The update followed a wave of user complaints on Reddit, where subscribers reported receiving the new prompts. The company confirmed that the QR code mechanism is now active for these specific plan types.

The verification window is strict. If a user fails to scan the code within seven days, Spotify will automatically downgrade their account to the free tier. The user will also be barred from joining any other Duo or Family plan for 12 months. This temporary ban prevents immediate re-enrollment in a different group while the verification issue is resolved.

The move targets a gap between written policy and actual usage. Goldman Sachs analysts noted in an October 15 report titled "Music in the Air: 10 Years On" that a "meaningful share" of family plan users are friends sharing costs rather than household members. The firm argued that tightening verification offers additional monetization opportunities, noting that enforcement had previously been minimal despite the same-address requirement.

The new rule applies to all current Duo and Family subscribers. While the same-address condition is standard for the plans, the in-person scan introduces a physical requirement for digital services. Households with members who live apart due to work or school may need to coordinate a meeting to complete the scan. The policy treats all shared plans the same, regardless of the reason for separate living arrangements.

Spotify will monitor compliance as the seven-day clock runs for each affected user. Those who complete the scan retain their premium status. Those who miss the deadline face the downgrade and the subsequent 12-month waiting period before they can rejoin a group plan. The process is now active for the targeted user base.
