Anthropic Investors Bank Billions Ahead of Record Public Offering

Major venture capital firms and tech heavyweights are sitting on multi-billion dollar stakes as the AI lab prepares for a massive initial public offering.

The artificial intelligence sector is bracing for a historic market entry. Anthropic, one of the leading AI laboratories, is expected to list publicly later this year with a valuation that could reach two trillion dollars. This prospective listing positions early and late-stage investors for substantial financial gains, even before the official stock debut. Current private market valuations place the company at approximately 965 billion dollars, a figure that already translates to billions of dollars in value for its key backers.

According to data from PitchBook and reporting by Bloomberg, several prominent figures have seen their fortunes grow significantly. Eric Schmidt, the former chief executive of Google, made an initial investment in 2021 during the Series A round when the startup’s valuation stood at 461 million dollars. He currently holds about one percent of the company. At the latest private valuation, that specific stake is now valued at nearly ten billion dollars.

Late-stage institutional investors have also secured massive positions. Iconiq, an investment firm, committed six billion dollars to Anthropic last year when the company was valued at 183 billion dollars. That significant bet has appreciated to 17 billion dollars and could double again upon the IPO. Menlo Ventures, which led the Series D funding round, has injected more than one billion dollars into the firm over time. Their accumulated stake is currently worth 14 billion dollars.

Other major venture capital players have entered the fray with equally substantial returns. Sequoia invested three billion dollars earlier this year, at which point Anthropic was already valued at 380 billion dollars. This move granted them roughly one percent ownership, effectively doubling their initial capital. Sound Ventures, a firm co-founded by Guy Oseary and Ashton Kutcher, has also deepened its commitment. After investing 35 million dollars in the 2023 Series C, the firm added another 400 million dollars, creating a stake worth billions. Notably, Kutcher departed Sound Ventures this year to launch a new venture capital firm.

Spark Capital represents a particularly dramatic example of early investment growth. As the only venture firm known to hold a board seat at Anthropic, it invested 75 million dollars in the 2023 Series C round when the company was valued at five billion dollars. That position has since expanded more than ninetyfold to reach a value of seven billion dollars.

The financial windfall is set to materialize for a diverse group of investors, from tech icons to specialized venture capital shops. The upcoming public listing will likely serve as the catalyst that converts these private market valuations into liquid wealth. Market observers will be watching closely to see if the final IPO price matches the optimistic two trillion dollar projection.

In the coming months, the focus will shift to the formalities of the public listing. Investors are expected to monitor the market’s reaction to the valuation targets. The transition from private to public status will mark a new chapter for Anthropic and its stakeholders, confirming the immense financial growth achieved by the AI industry over the past few years.
