Barcelona hosts Real Madrid this Sunday in a match that could shift the long-standing rivalry in favor of one side. The two clubs are currently tied with 106 wins each in their historical meetings. A victory on Sunday would break that deadlock and grant the winner the all-time lead in this fixture.
The rivalry dates back to 1902 and has featured some of the most prominent figures in football history. Early eras included legends such as David Beckham and Zinedine Zidane. More recent matchups have centered on players like Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. Current attention has shifted to Lamine Yamal and Raphinha for Barcelona, and Kylian Mbappe, Jude Bellingham, and Vinicius Jr for Real Madrid.
Past results provide context for the intensity of the upcoming game. On April 23, 2017, Barcelona won 3-2 at the Santiago Bernabeu. Lionel Messi scored his 500th goal for the club in the final kick of that match. Sergio Ramos was sent off for a two-footed lunge on Messi, and Ivan Rakitic put Barcelona ahead after the break.
Another notable encounter occurred on March 10, 2007, when the teams drew 3-3 at Camp Nou. A 19-year-old Messi scored his first career hat-trick to save a point for Barcelona, who played the second half with ten men. Ruud van Nistelrooy scored twice for Real Madrid, and Sergio Ramos added a third before Messi equalized in stoppage time. Both clubs finished that season with 76 points, with Real Madrid winning the title on head-to-head record.
Real Madrid dominated a 4-2 home victory on April 10, 2005, showcasing their star-studded squad. Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo Nazario, and Raul scored early goals, while Michael Owen added a fourth in the 65th minute. Samuel Eto'o and Ronaldinho found the net for Barcelona, but the visitors still claimed the league that season by three points.
The scoreline swung dramatically on May 2, 2009, when Barcelona defeated Real Madrid 6-2 at the Bernabeu. Thierry Henry scored two goals, including one just four minutes after Gonzalo Higuain gave Real the lead. Lionel Messi, Carles Puyol, and Gerard Pique also contributed to the rout. Barcelona won the league that year by nine points.
The most recent major cup clash between the sides ended in a 1-0 Real Madrid win in the Copa del Rey final on April 20, 2011. The match went to extra time after a goalless 90 minutes. Cristiano Ronaldo headed in a pass from Angel Di Maria to secure the trophy. Di Maria was sent off for a second yellow card, but Real Madrid kept the lead to claim their first domestic cup since 1993.
