The center of the field determines the outcome of most high-level matches in the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association.

Midfielders control the tempo of play by connecting defensive actions with offensive opportunities. They do not merely pass the ball. They dictate where the game is played and how fast it moves.

Tayla McDuff, a four-year varsity player for King Philip, occupies the center midfield position. Her team holds a 14-3 record and the No. 1 seed in Division 2 power ratings. McDuff has committed to Bentley University and serves as a captain on the squad.

McDuff described her role as requiring constant communication and support for teammates. She noted that midfielders often record more assists than goals. She stated that players in this position cannot be selfish because they help others score.

Lauren Riley-Gove coaches Gloucester, which maintains a perfect 16-0 record. Her team ranks No. 6 in Division 3. Riley-Gove emphasized that successful teams require midfielders who are both offense and defense minded. She explained that these players must know when to create plays and when to strip the ball from opponents.

Gloucester senior Olivia Madruga has recorded six goals and 11 assists this season. Riley-Gove credited Madruga for her advanced game awareness. The coach noted that Madruga studied the game from the sidelines during her eighth-grade year before becoming a starter. This early observation allowed her to anticipate plays and create movement up the field.

Kaitlyn Wilder, the King Philip coach, views the roster as a puzzle requiring every piece to function. She stated that a solid defense stops attacks, a great midfielder acts as the engine, and a forward finishes the play. Her team includes 11 seniors who are central to this structure.

Belmont coach Jessica Smith relies on all four of her midfielders to win big games. Senior captain Elsie Lakin-Schultz plays defensive center mid for the Marauders. Lakin-Schultz has committed to Brown University. She described her position as distribution focused, allowing her to send the ball in any direction or back to defenders to reset the play.

The MIAA regular season ends on Sunday, October 28. Tournament brackets for Divisions 1 through 4 will be released on Tuesday. Games are scheduled to begin on Thursday, November 5, with an option to play on November 4 if both teams agree.

Power ratings released Tuesday show clear leaders in each division. Lincoln-Sudbury leads Division 1 with a 13-0-1 record and a 4.2925 rating. Sandwich leads Division 3 with a 17-0-0 record and a 4.6518 rating. King Philip leads Division 2 with a 3.7276 rating. Dennis Yarmouth leads Division 4 with a 2.9591 rating and holds the reigning state championship.
