Midterm Ballots: 21 Million Cast as U.S. Moves Third Carrier

Nearly 21 million Americans have cast ballots ahead of the November 3 midterm elections, according to data from the University of Florida’s Election Lab. The total rose by approximately two million in a single day, marking a sharp increase in participation more than a week before Election Day.
The surge in voting coincides with a major shift in military positioning. The United States is sending a third aircraft carrier to the Middle East region. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth recently traveled to Israel to meet with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, signaling closer coordination between the two governments.
A person briefed on U.S. and Israeli war planning told NPR that both nations are preparing for a possible attack on Iran. The timing suggests that President Trump may weigh military action after the midterms to prevent a spike in oil prices from affecting voters. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that the country is ready for both diplomacy and war.
Tehran is demanding formal control of the Strait of Hormuz and the withdrawal of U.S. troops from the region. While the U.S. and Israel possess the capability to inflict heavy damage, Iran has shown no indication of making major concessions. This development comes as heavier fighting involving Iran could resume in the coming weeks, with some U.S. personnel leaving the area while reinforcements arrive.
Voting patterns in key battleground states are significantly higher than during the previous midterm cycle. Democrats are currently voting at higher rates than Republicans, a trend consistent with historical data where Democrats vote early and Republicans turn out on Election Day. However, analysts caution that early figures do not necessarily predict final results.
In a separate legal matter, a federal magistrate judge ruled that President Trump must sit for a deposition in his $10 billion defamation case against the BBC. The suit concerns a late 2024 Panorama broadcast that allegedly edited his January 6 speech. Trump has proposed January for the deposition, but the judge ordered him to comply with court rules or face sanctions.
Grocery prices remain a focal point for households. Ground beef reached $6.79 per pound last month, an 85 percent increase over the past decade. Eggs dropped to $2.27 per dozen, while butter averaged $3.96 in September. Coffee prices remain 44 percent higher than two years ago despite the removal of tariffs on the product.
