Northeastern University’s swim and dive team rebounded from a Friday loss to host a dominant 166-107 victory against the University of Rhode Island Rams on Saturday. The win at the Barletta Natatorium marked the Huskies’ home opener and improved their overall record to 2-1, while their Conference on Atlantic Coast Athletic Conference record remained 0-0.
The team had started the weekend with mixed results in a tri-meet against Harvard and MIT. Northeastern defeated MIT 175-121 on October 23, but fell to Harvard 198-98 in the same event. Senior May Bradburn and junior Delaney Alonso led individual efforts in that tri-meet, winning the 100-yard butterfly and 200-yard backstroke, respectively.
The Huskies captured the 200-yard freestyle relay in that Friday meet with a time of 1:32.34. The relay team consisted of Bradburn, sophomore Alex Fuller, graduate student Havana Layton, and senior Mary Nordmann. That time was nearly one second faster than the team’s previous effort, moving the group closer to their program record of 1:30.
Saturday’s competition against Rhode Island featured eleven individual and relay victories for Northeastern. The team swept the podium in four different events. Freshman Sydney Holbach provided a standout performance in the diving events, scoring 285.45 to win the 3-meter dive. She also placed second in the 1-meter dive, a result that follows a challenging period for the program after longtime coach Lauren Colby departed.
Swimming results included a 200-yard freestyle win for freshman Emily De Amicis, who touched the wall in 1:52.96. Sophomore Abigail Gowern secured victories in both the 200-yard butterfly and the 500-yard freestyle. Other individual winners included Bradburn in the 50-yard freestyle, Layton in the 100-yard freestyle, Fuller in the 100-yard backstroke, and Sophie Bromley in the 200-yard backstroke, where she recorded a time of 2:05.07.
Marea Li won the 100-yard breaststroke, and Eliana Auerbach took the 200-yard breaststroke. The Huskies also dominated the relays, taking the top two spots in the 200-yard medley relay. The winning squad of Alonso, Li, Fuller, and Bradburn finished in 1:44.35.
The team’s next competition is scheduled for Saturday, November 7, at the Barletta Natatorium. Northeastern will host the University of Connecticut Huskies, who currently hold a 1-0 record in the Big East Conference.
