The Los Angeles Rams defeated the Los Angeles Chargers 24-9 on Sunday at SoFi Stadium, ending a 0-7 start for their city rivals and securing their first back-to-back wins of the season. The victory marks the Rams' second win in the three editions of the Los Angeles derby since both franchises relocated to the city a decade ago.
The game began with a historic offensive collapse for the home team. The Rams gained just 24 yards on their first 15 plays, failing to secure a single first down on their initial five drives. Coach Sean McVay had never before seen his team go without a first down on its first five drives. The Rams trailed 9-3 in the final moments of the first half before finally moving the ball.
Quentin Lake returned a short pass from Justin Herbert 45 yards to set up the Rams' opening field goal. Herbert has thrown an interception in all seven games this season. The Chargers' offense, led by play-caller Mike McDaniel, managed 295 total yards but could not capitalize on scoring opportunities. McDaniel retained play-calling duties despite the team's winless record, using back-to-back flea-flickers to reach the second field goal in the second quarter.
The Rams took control in the second half with three touchdown drives. Blake Corum rushed for 73 yards, including a 23-yard score late in the third quarter. Kyren Williams added a rushing touchdown with 19 seconds left in the first half. Matthew Stafford passed for 157 yards and a touchdown, completing 11 of 17 passes for Puka Nacua, who caught the ball 11 times for 80 yards and a score.
The Chargers remain the only winless team in the NFL, extending their worst start to a season since 2000. Although Justin Herbert passed for 257 yards, the defense could not stop the Rams' rushing attack. The Chargers are set to host the Houston Texans on Sunday. The Rams will travel to face the Washington Commanders on Sunday.
Injuries affected both rosters. Chargers linebacker Daiyan Henley injured his shoulder in the first quarter but returned to the game. Safety Derwin James went on injured reserve with a hamstring injury, missing his fourth straight game. Rams cornerback Jaylen Watson exited the game with a shoulder injury, while safety Trent McDuffie injured his back late in the contest after returning from a two-game absence with a groin issue.
