A hiker fell several hundred feet on Mount Timpanogos in October, requiring a high-altitude extraction from a narrow cliff ledge. Utah County Sheriff’s Office video released this week shows the rescue operation that pulled the woman from the mountain.
The incident occurred on Oct. 26 when the woman was walking a trail on the 11,700-foot peak. She lost her footing and slid down the slope until she stopped on a ledge. A Search and Rescue pilot spotted her from an airplane as the team began deploying members to the site.
The footage captures the steep terrain where the fall happened and a rescue helicopter hovering above to hoist the hiker to safety. The mountain is located about 50 miles south of Salt Lake City and offers 17.4 miles of trails accessible from Aspen Grove and Timpooneke trailheads.
Officials stated on Tuesday that the hiker is recovering well from her injuries. The sheriff’s office said in a social media update that they wish her a full and speedy recovery. They also thanked the various agencies that rushed to assist during the operation.
The agency noted that the incident serves as a reminder of how quickly a recreational outing can become a life-or-death situation. The video was shared publicly to illustrate the scale of the rescue effort on the steep mountain terrain.
