Elena Rybakina has secured her spot in the Ningbo Open final, defeating sixth seed Diana Shnaider 6-3, 7-5 in the semifinal. The victory keeps the defending champion’s title defense alive and positions her for a decisive showdown on Sunday. This result serves as a significant statement to her competitors ahead of the upcoming WTA Finals next month.

Her final opponent will be unseeded Leylah Fernandez from Canada. Fernandez earned her place by overcoming Czech player Marie Bouzkova with an identical scoreline of 6-3, 7-5. Both matches took place at the Yinzhou International Tennis Centre in the eastern Chinese city.

Rybakina, the current Australian Open and US Open champion, arrived in Ningbo following a challenging period. She suffered a heavy loss in Beijing and subsequently withdrew from the Wuhan tournament due to a foot injury. Against the 13th-ranked Shnaider, she displayed moments of elite play, although the match remained competitive throughout.

In the opening set, Rybakina established control with aggressive baseline play and powerful winners. However, a temporary drop in form forced her to fight for the set point, which she eventually converted on her 11th opportunity. Reflecting on the difficulty, Rybakina noted that while she played well initially, closing the game proved challenging despite many chances.

The second set mirrored the first in intensity. The 27-year-old continued to face issues with first-serve accuracy but managed to break serve to take a 4-3 lead. Shnaider responded by breaking Rybakina’s serve to love in the 10th game. Rybakina answered with big hitting to regain the advantage and then served with increased confidence to seal the victory.

Shnaider’s left-handed style presented specific tactical challenges for the world number one. Rybakina acknowledged the difficulty of adapting to left-handed opponents, noting that switching patterns during rallies was an issue. She expressed satisfaction with winning in straight sets. Fernandez is also left-handed, meaning Rybakina will face a similar stylistic test in the final.

After the final, Rybakina plans to compete in the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo before beginning her WTA Finals title defense at Indian Wells on November 8. Regarding the prospect of winning back-to-back titles in Ningbo, she remained measured, stating that she intends to fight and give her all in the championship match.
