Neve Campbell has confirmed that she will return to the screen for the next entry in the Scream franchise. The actress, who plays the character Sidney Prescott, told Associated Press that a seventh sequel is currently in development. She stated, “Scream 8 .. that’s in the pipeline as well .. I’ll be in it.”
Campbell has appeared in every Scream film except one. Her return comes after a brief hiatus from the series. She sat out the 2023 release, Scream VI, due to a disagreement over compensation. In a statement released at the time, Campbell said she felt the offer did not match the value she had brought to the franchise. She noted that she had worked hard in her career to establish that value, particularly within this specific movie series.
The decision to skip the sixth installment changed the dynamic for the seventh film. Several younger cast members from Scream VI either left the project or chose not to return. Campbell agreed to take on the lead role again for the seventh movie. The film was written and directed by Kevin Williamson, the creator of the original Scream.
In the latest release, Campbell portrays Sidney Prescott alongside her teenage daughter, a character played by Isabel May. The plot follows the two as they defend against a new version of the antagonist known as Ghost Face. Courteney Cox, who plays Sidney’s long-time associate Gale Weathers, also appears in the film. Cox has been a consistent presence in the series, appearing in multiple installments despite Campbell's absence from the sixth movie.
The seventh film achieved the highest box office total in the franchise's history. It earned $213 million in global ticket sales. This figure surpasses the previous record held by the first Scream movie, which collected $173 million worldwide. Critics received the new film with mixed opinions, but the financial results indicate strong audience interest.
Campbell and Cox are currently the most prominent actors associated with the series. The financial performance of the seventh film suggests that production teams are moving forward with plans for an eighth installment. Campbell has not provided details on the plot or specific production timeline for the upcoming sequel.
