Stony Brook University will host a public talk with alumna Athena LaTocha on November 11. The event marks Native American Heritage Month and takes place at 4:00 p.m. in the Zuccaire Gallery.
The gallery is located on the first floor of the Staller Center for the Arts. The discussion is moderated by Joseph M. Pierce. He is a professor in the Department of Hispanic Languages and Literature and the founding director of the Native American and Indigenous Studies Initiative.
LaTocha is an artist whose works on paper focus on the relationship between human-made and natural worlds. The conversation will cover Indigenous voices, artistic expression, and diverse perspectives. It also addresses the intersections of art, identity, and environment.
The event is free and open to the public. Attendees must register online through the SB Engaged event page. A reception follows immediately after the discussion. The university encourages students, faculty, staff, and community members to attend.
The Office of Diversity, Intercultural, and Community Engagement, the Native American and Indigenous Studies program, and the Zuccaire Gallery co-host the event. The program aims to celebrate Indigenous perspectives through dialogue and artistic presentation.
