A 36-year-old British woman died at a clinic in the Bahamas after a strong current swept her away while she tried to rescue her two sons.
The incident occurred on Tuesday near the southern point of North Bimini. Police reported that the woman was snorkeling with her husband and their two sons when the water pulled the boys from the group. As she attempted to swim toward them, the current also carried the mother away. The children were eventually pulled from the water and rescued.
Officers at the Alice Town police station received a report shortly after 10 a.m. that a woman was unresponsive at the North Bimini ferry dock. By the time they arrived, medics had already transported her to the local clinic. A doctor pronounced her dead there after attempts to revive her failed. Police noted that CPR had been administered at the ferry dock before she was moved.
The Royal Bahamas Police Force stated that foul play is not suspected at this time. The force opened an investigation and confirmed that an autopsy is scheduled to determine the precise cause of death. In a statement released on social media, the police described the sequence of events leading to her discovery at the dock.
The United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office confirmed it is monitoring the case. A spokesperson said officials are in contact with local authorities and are providing support to the family. The office added that its thoughts are with the family of the British woman who died in the Bahamas.
North Bimini is part of a small island group located between Andros and Miami. It serves as the closest point in the Bahamas to the US mainland. The area is known for its history as a former home of Ernest Hemingway and for hosting a major shark research center.
