A 36-year-old woman from Stapleford, Nottinghamshire, died in the Bahamas on Tuesday after a strong current carried her away during a snorkeling trip. The Royal Bahamas Police Force stated that officers on the island of Bimini have opened an investigation into her sudden death. The family had been swimming near the southern point of the island when the incident occurred.

Police reported that the current initially swept the woman’s two sons from the water. As she attempted to reach them, she was also pulled away. Local authorities confirmed that both boys were later rescued from the sea. The woman was subsequently pulled from the water and brought to the North Bimini Ferry Dock, where bystanders administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

Officers at the Alice Town police station received a call shortly after 10 a.m. indicating that an unresponsive woman was at the ferry dock. By the time they arrived, she had already been transported to a local clinic for medical attention. A physician on site pronounced her dead despite efforts to revive her. The police force noted that foul play is not suspected at this stage.

An autopsy is scheduled to determine the precise cause of death. A spokesperson for the Foreign Office confirmed that British officials are in contact with local authorities and are providing support to the family. The spokesperson stated that the department’s thoughts were with the relatives of the deceased.

The investigation remains active as officials gather further evidence from the scene. The family’s husband was present at the time of the incident but was not involved in the rescue of the children or the woman according to the preliminary account provided by the force.
