Kylian Mbappe scored two goals on Sunday to lead Real Madrid to a 2-1 victory over Barcelona at Camp Nou. The win ended Barcelona's nine-game winning streak in La Liga and marked the first defeat for the Catalan club in the top flight this season.
The double extended Mbappe's personal tally to 14 goals this season. It also brought his total career goals for Real Madrid to 100 across all competitions since he joined the club from Paris Saint-Germain in 2024.
The 27-year-old forward is currently the second-highest scorer in La Liga. His performance adds to a strong 2025-26 campaign that followed his previous season as the top scorer in both La Liga and the Champions League. He also won the Golden Boot at the World Cup and became the all-time leading scorer in that tournament's history.
These achievements have positioned Mbappe as a favorite for the Ballon d'Or. The award for the best player of the 2025-26 season will be presented at a ceremony in London on Monday.
For Real Madrid, the result improved their standing in the league table. They now sit in third place with 24 points after 10 matches. Barcelona leads the league with more points, while Atletico Madrid sits second with 25 points. Real Madrid trails Barcelona by three points with just over a quarter of the season completed.
The victory snapped Barcelona's momentum after they had defeated every opponent in the league previously. Had Barcelona won, they would have broken a record set by Real Madrid in the 1968-69 season for the best start to a La Liga campaign. Barcelona has now lost two consecutive matches, having also fallen to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League earlier in the month.
The win gave Real Madrid a 107-106 lead in the all-time head-to-head record between the two clubs. Jose Mourinho, who returned to manage Real Madrid after two seasons without trophies, credited his team's focus on winning the championship rather than just the match.
"If we win today but lose at El Sardinero, it counts for nothing, because Madrid isn't playing to win at the Camp Nou," Mourinho said. "They're playing to win the championship."
Real Madrid have won five consecutive matches, including three in La Liga and two in the Champions League. This run follows earlier setbacks against Real Betis and Atletico Madrid last month. The team's recent stability suggests they are closing the gap on their rivals despite the early season struggles.
Mourinho celebrated the win with his signature knee slide. The 63-year-old manager has previously won three trophies with Real Madrid during his first tenure, including a record-breaking La Liga title. His latest victory provides evidence that his methods can challenge Barcelona's recent dominance in Spanish football.
