Kimi Antonelli won the United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas on Sunday, extending his lead in the Formula One drivers' championship to 123 points. The 20-year-old Italian finished the 56-lap race in 1:35:16.650, starting from pole position. This result brings him within one win of securing his first world title.
Charles Leclerc of Monaco finished second, crossing the line 13.078 seconds behind Antonelli. Max Verstappen, the four-time defending champion, completed the podium 17.485 seconds behind the winner. Verstappen is now mathematically eliminated from the title race. He noted that his car's pace was insufficient and that the available tires were not ideal for the conditions. He also credited a late Virtual Safety Car for helping him maintain his position.
Strategy determined the outcome for Antonelli. While other drivers made two pit stops, Antonelli waited until Lap 25 for his only stop. He did not return to the pit lane for the remainder of the race. Antonelli described the decision as a team effort, stating that the strategy team believed in him enough to attempt the one-stop strategy. A Virtual Safety Car triggered on Lap 52 when Valtteri Bottas's Cadillac stopped on the track. It remained in effect until the penultimate lap, preventing any late-race challenges.
Mercedes expanded its advantage in the constructors' championship to 133 points. The team now holds 607 points compared to Ferrari's 474. Antonelli has now won both United States races on this year's calendar, a streak that includes five consecutive victories earlier in the season. Team principal Toto Wolff praised the performance, calling it the best race Antonelli has produced so far. Wolff said the driver controlled the race from the start despite starting with the inferior tire compound.
Russell must win the next race in Mexico City to remain in contention for the title. If he fails to do so, the championship will be decided in Antonelli's favor. Antonelli acknowledged the proximity of the title but stated that his mindset remains focused on finishing the season strongly. He aims to enter the 2027 season with high confidence. The next race on the calendar is the Las Vegas Grand Prix in November.
