Manchester United fans booed their players off the pitch after a 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth on Sunday. The result marked the club's worst start to a Premier League season in 40 years.

The loss followed a 3-0 defeat at Como in the Champions League on Wednesday. Michael Carrick, the current manager, was cheered as he left the field. The players who followed him were met with jeers. This specific sequence of events has not happened at Old Trafford in the club's recent history.

Bryan Mbeumo is currently the team's leading scorer. He has four goals this season. Eight other players in the Premier League have scored more than four goals. All eight of those players are currently in the Premier League's scoring chart above the United squad.

The club has struggled to find a consistent center forward since Cristiano Ronaldo left in November 2022. Rasmus Hojlund was signed as a long-term solution but was sent back to Italy due to a lack of goals. Benjamin Sesko arrived in the summer of 2025 for a significant fee. The Serbian international has been affected by injuries and was absent for key parts of the current slump.

United has tried wide players like Matheus Cunha and Mbeumo in the striker role. They also placed Bruno Fernandes in a false nine position. Fernandes won the Professional Footballers’ Association’s Player of the Year award for breaking the Premier League record for assists in a season. Critics argue the new role removed his ability to orchestrate play from midfield.

Fernandes was booed despite not playing in the Bournemouth match. Fans punished him for publicly criticizing Carrick's tactics after the Como loss. The Portuguese playmaker is 32 years old. He remains the standout performer for the side, though his future at the club is now in doubt. The Saudi Pro League and Galatasaray were linked with moves for him this summer.

The failure to sign a left-back in the summer transfer window was a major point of contention. Lisandro Martinez, who helped Argentina reach the 2026 World Cup final, criticized the club's lack of investment after the Atletico Madrid defeat. He specifically targeted CEO Jason Wilcox. Martinez is regarded as a key defender, yet the squad lacked depth at the back left.

Ownership and management have faced intense scrutiny. The Glazer family bought the club in 2005. Ed Woodward served as CEO until 2022 and was criticized for failed signings. Current CEO Omar Berrada and the technical director are now the focus of fan anger. Sir Jim Ratcliffe's INEOS Group invested two years ago, but fans view the return on investment as minimal so far.

Gary Neville, the former United defender, spoke on Sky Sports on Sunday. He alleged a lack of professionalism within the squad. He stated, 'There are a few of them that are not that professional.' Ralf Rangnick, now the Austrian national team coach, previously described the club as needing open-heart surgery.
