Boston residents are increasingly leaving dating applications in favor of in-person matchmaking events and social media shows.

The shift follows the release of the Boston season of the Netflix series "Love Is Blind," which placed local singles in the public eye. Morrey Eglin, a participant in that season, described the experience as emotionally draining. He said he did not leave the show with a fiancée and is currently pausing his search for a partner.

"I’m a really social guy. I bounce at Lincoln, I’m in the scene, but it wasn’t working, so that’s why I went on 'Love Is Blind,'" Eglin said. He noted that he never wanted his love story to begin on a digital platform. "I want to bump into somebody in an airport, like, I drop all my papers."

Eglin is part of a larger group of singles reacting to what they perceive as the limitations of current dating technology. Julz Radly, the founder of Stoop Dating, has received thousands of applications from people seeking blind dates arranged by her service. Her show features singles meeting on porches for the first time.

"If people are willing to go on a date on a stoop on camera, that's how you know dating is so bad nowadays," Radly said. She argues that apps make people feel disposable, allowing users to dismiss potential partners based on appearance alone. "I think everyone just wants that human connection that the apps are lacking."

Bored of Dating Apps is preparing to launch its first Boston event in November. The company hosts in-person gatherings designed to facilitate casual flirting and conversation without the use of matching algorithms. Jessica Evans, a representative for the company, said, "We like it when humans human and chat and flirt with each other. We don’t need an algorithm, sometimes all you need is eye contact."

Tickets for the upcoming Bored of Dating Apps event remain available. Stoop Dating also offers private events for those who prefer not to be filmed and has plans to expand its television format to every neighborhood in Boston.
