Netflix released Balaraw: Blood Island on Wednesday, adding a new entry to the catalog of island mystery dramas. The Filipino thriller centers on a woman investigating the disappearance of her mother, who vanished after boarding a bus toward an unnamed location. The show marks the latest addition to streaming platforms offering original content from Southeast Asian creators.

The narrative begins with Sabina Tejeros, played by Janine Gutierrez, on her first day at a local hospital. Her mother, Rebecca, played by Agot Isidro, asks her about recurring dreams involving a running man and a photograph. After Sabina steps away for a phone call, Rebecca disappears. Four years later, Sabina continues her search with the help of her girlfriend, Bulak Bernabe, played by Charlie Dizon. A private investigator reveals that Rebecca intended to visit an island called Balaraw, a place not listed on standard maps that only becomes visible under certain conditions.

Sabina's uncle, Arturo Syquija, a local police officer played by Ronnie Lazaro, knew Rebecca's destination but kept the information from Sabina. Citing Rebecca's wish to be found only by those who sought her, Arturo concealed the truth. Determined to reach the island, Sabina sneaks to the port town where the only access point exists. She is joined by Bulak and Arturo, and they secure a boat captain to take them across. The island remains invisible until a massive wave strikes the vessel, washing the three characters onto the shore of Balaraw.

The series is created by Jericho Aguado, Dodo Dayao, and Rae Red. It draws heavily on Filipino folklore and shares tonal similarities with the television series Lost. The first episode focuses primarily on the journey to the island, establishing the backstory of Sabina and her connection to the location. Viewers witness ritualistic violence and people held against their will on the shore. The episode ends with Sabina waking up on the beach, having survived the wave that brought her there.

Janine Gutierrez portrays Sabina as a determined investigator who lost her hospital job after a confrontation with a doctor. She is shown considering swimming to the island after failing to find a willing passenger for the boat. The review notes that the first episode sets up the scenario effectively, though the mechanics of how Sabina discovers the island's location remain somewhat obscure. The show is recommended for viewers who enjoy cryptic thrillers that pose more questions than they answer.

The series is now available for streaming on Netflix. The opening scene features a rainforest setting with tiki torches and men trapped in wooden cages, one of whom escapes to find himself isolated. The final shot of the first episode shows Sabina waking on the shore of Balaraw.
