The traditional preseason top 25 ranking often collapses the moment the season begins, but the 2026-27 men's college basketball season presents a different kind of instability. Dozens of active lawsuits across the country are determining whether key players can take the court, making a fixed 1-25 list difficult to maintain. To account for this volatility, ESPN analysts Jeff Borzello and Myron Medcalf divided 75 teams into 11 distinct tiers based on their potential.

The top tier consists of three programs with high ceilings and proven floors: Florida, Duke, and Illinois. Florida retains four starters from its 2025 national championship team, including Thomas Haugh, Alex Condon, and Rueben Chinyelu. The team's status may change if Denzel Aberdeen is cleared to play after a year at Kentucky, though coach Todd Golden holds the No. 1 team in the country regardless of his eligibility. Duke brings back four key players and added Wisconsin transfer John Blackwell, the top guard in the portal, to a roster that includes the second-best recruiting class in the nation.

Illinois completed a strong retention effort by keeping five key players, including All-American David Mirkovic. Coach Brad Underwood added Providence transfer Stefan Vaaks and top-25 recruit Quentin Coleman to a squad aiming for a repeat Final Four appearance. These three teams are expected to lead most rankings regardless of how the five-for-five lawsuits resolve in courtrooms.

Tier II includes Final Four contenders such as Arizona, UConn, Texas, and Michigan State. Arizona faces uncertainty regarding forward RJ Godfrey due to fifth-year eligibility issues, while the team retains Motiejus Krivas and adds five-star recruit Caleb Holt. UConn returned Braylon Mullins on a significant NIL deal and Silas Demary Jr., though they must replace their top three scorers from last season. Texas added Marcus Spears Jr., the No. 1 recruit in the 2027 class, and transfers David Punch and Isaiah Johnson.

The most complex tier is Tier IV, labeled for teams in eligibility limbo. Hundreds of players still lack definitive answers regarding their status, creating wide gaps in team expectations. Texas Tech and St. John's sit at the top of this group. Texas Tech awaits decisions on Darrion Williams, Donovan Atwell, and Jamichael Stillwell. Atwell's trial is not scheduled until June, making him the most likely to remain eligible for the full season. St. John's has three players awaiting court decisions after Quinn Ellis was cleared, with Rick Pitino potentially starting at least two of them.

Other schools in this tier face similar hurdles. Gonzaga's backcourt depends on whether Xaivian Lee, Javon Bennett, and Chauncey Wiggins receive another year. BYU and Iowa State each have one player who could define their tournament status. Oklahoma needs SMU transfer B.J. Edwards and Villanova transfer Duke Brennan to be eligible to secure a comfortable NCAA tournament bid. LSU, under Will Wade, has cleared international additions Michael Ruzic and Saliou Niang, though former star RJ Luis Jr. is unlikely to suit up.

Tier III features second-weekend threats whose fortunes hinge on specific player availabilities. Kansas' roster strength depends on whether Trey Kaufman-Renn, Melvin Council Jr., and Tre White are eligible. Louisville's performance may dip if Seth Trimble is unavailable. Missouri's trajectory changes significantly if Mark Mitchell is allowed to play, while Miami's level is defined by whether Malik Reneau receives a fifth year. Kentucky signed Milan Momcilovic, who shot 49% from three last season, and must rely on Malachi Moreno for a breakout campaign.

The remaining tiers categorize teams from those capable of winning a tournament game to Cinderella hopefuls. Purdue, a top 25 consideration, sits just outside the upper echelons due to recent roster changes. The full list of 75 teams provides a framework for understanding the season's start, acknowledging that court outcomes will likely shift these tiers as the fall progresses.
