The Oklahoma City Thunder entered the new season with a perfect record, but that advantage evaporated on Monday when the team confirmed two starting guards would undergo surgery. Jalen Williams, who suffered a dislocated left ankle and fractured fibula, and Cason Wallace, who tore the labrum in his left shoulder, are both expected to be out for several months.

The injuries occurred during a 108-101 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday night. Williams was carried off the court on a stretcher after being hurt on a drive late in the fourth quarter. Wallace exited in the first quarter and did not return to the game.

The absence of these two players leaves a substantial gap in the Thunder's perimeter defense, a role that has anchored the team for years. General Manager Sam Presti indicated the front office is evaluating options to replace them. The team is projected to receive a $15 million disabled player exception, which allows them to sign or trade for a player in the final year of his contract.

Financial constraints limit the scope of potential moves. Using more than $6.9 million of that exception would push the Thunder over the second apron. Additionally, the team holds three trade exceptions worth $17.8 million, $11.3 million, and $9.2 million. The Thunder possess seven first-round picks and 21 second-round picks, providing the assets necessary for a trade, though matching salaries for high-profile targets remains difficult.

Oklahoma City previously thinned its roster by trading Luguentz Dort, Isaiah Joe, and Aaron Wiggins over the summer. With Williams and Wallace now sidelined, the team is left with limited elite perimeter defenders. Alex Caruso remains the primary option, but the team typically manages his minutes to preserve him for the playoffs. The loss of depth complicates the Thunder's ability to defend multiple high-caliber opponents in the Western Conference.

The Thunder finished 3-0 before the injuries and hold a 39-10 record without Williams from the previous season. The team retains significant star power at the guard and center positions, but the sudden reduction in roster depth forces the front office to act quickly. The next step involves determining whether to utilize the financial tools available to acquire a replacement before the trade deadline.
