Aaron Philo will start at quarterback for Florida against Georgia on Saturday, ending his brief absence from the Gators' lineup. A source familiar with the decision confirmed that the junior will take the field in the SEC showdown scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
Philo has been sidelined since sustaining a shoulder injury during Florida's 38-19 loss to South Carolina on Oct. 10. He missed the following week entirely, sitting out the 27-24 victory over then-No. 7 Texas. Tramell Jones Jr., who started in Austin, will remain available for the upcoming matchup despite both quarterbacks being listed as questionable on Thursday's SEC player availability report.
Coach Jon Sumrall indicated that no formal announcement would precede the game, yet the decision to return Philo signals a shift in strategy. Jones, in his first career start against the Longhorns, completed 22 of 35 passes for 155 yards and two touchdowns without an interception. His performance provided stability during a two-week stretch where the Gators struggled to maintain consistency.
The return of Philo carries personal weight in Atlanta. He led Prince Avenue Christian, a school near Athens, to consecutive state titles and broke the Georgia high school passing record previously held by Trevor Lawrence. Philo transferred from Georgia Tech to Florida after offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner moved to Gainesville, where he won the starting job in preseason competition.
Florida enters the game as the No. 17 team in the polls with a 5-2 record. The Gators began the season 4-0, including a 52-28 win over then-No. 4 Ole Miss, but have lost their last two contests. Those defeats include a 45-17 loss at Missouri and the homecoming game against South Carolina. A victory over the No. 3 Bulldogs would improve Florida's College Football Playoff odds from 9.5% to 29% according to the CBS Sports CFP Forecaster.
Georgia, currently 6-1 with a 4-1 conference record, is coming off a 27-24 home loss to Auburn decided by a last-second field goal. The Bulldogs used their bye week to rest and recover. They lead the SEC in scoring defense, allowing an average of 15.9 points per game, and stand as one of only two teams in the conference with a single loss.
The rivalry game marks the first time this matchup has been played in Atlanta. The traditional venue, EverBank Stadium in Jacksonville, is undergoing renovations, prompting the move to Mercedes-Benz Stadium for this Saturday's contest.
