The Portland Trail Blazers currently hold the best record in the Western Conference, standing at 6-1. The team sits one percentage point ahead of the Houston Rockets and Los Angeles Lakers, both of whom are 7-2. This position comes early in the season, but it places Portland atop the West standings as of this week.
The Blazers' start is influenced by their schedule. Four of their six victories came against the Phoenix Suns, Utah Jazz, and Sacramento Kings, three of the bottom four teams in the conference. Their top win occurred last week against the Lakers in Los Angeles, where they defeated the visitors 136-129. Deni Avdija and Ja Morant each scored 23 points in that game, overcoming 41 points and nine assists from Luka Doncic.
The two teams meet again at Crypto.com Arena at 10 p.m. ET on Friday, Nov. 6. The Lakers are a 2.5-point favorite in the current odds. SportsLine's projection model, which simulates games 10,000 times, assigns a 61% probability to the Lakers covering that spread. The model gives this bet a 'C' grade.
Los Angeles leads the league in offensive efficiency, averaging 121.1 points per 100 possessions. Despite this offensive output, the team ranks 26th in turnover rate at 17.6%. SportsLine expert Doug "Prop Bet Guy" Kralstein suggests a player prop on Toumani Camara. Kralstein notes that Camara has made at least three 3-pointers in his last six games. He points out that the Lakers allow the ninth-most 3-pointers and have the seventh-highest frequency of catch-and-shoot 3-pointers due to the presence of Walker Kessler in the paint.
Earlier in the night, the Philadelphia 76ers visit the Cleveland Cavaliers at 7:30 p.m. ET. This marks the second meeting between the clubs this season. In their first contest in Philadelphia, Cleveland built a 29-point lead late in the second quarter before the 76ers rallied. Tyrese Maxey scored 32 points in that 114-106 victory for Philadelphia.
The 76ers currently rank 20th in the league in offensive scoring, averaging 110.5 points per 100 possessions. The SportsLine model predicts a 62% chance for the Cavaliers to cover their +2.5 line. The model assigns a moderate 'B' grade to this bet, viewing Cleveland as the value play despite the 76ers' recent momentum.
In college football, SMU hosts Virginia Tech at 7 p.m. ET in what is described as an elimination game for ACC standings. Both teams are 6-2 overall. SMU is 4-2 in conference play, while Virginia Tech is 3-2. SMU comes off a road loss to Syracuse, whereas Virginia Tech enters the game following a bye week. SportsLine model projects a 60% chance for SMU to cover their -6.5 line, a bet with a 'B' grade. Expert Emory Hunt favors Virginia Tech, citing their defensive performance, but the model disagrees with that assessment.
Nebraska visits Illinois at 8 p.m. ET in a Big Ten matchup. The Illini (5-3) have won three consecutive games, while the Cornhusakers (5-3) have lost three straight by one score. Nebraska's turnover margin has dropped to minus 3 over its last three games, compared to plus 6 in its first five. Expert Tom Fornelli favors Illinois at +165, noting the Illini's strength in close games. The SportsLine model, however, predicts a 56% chance for Nebraska to cover their -4 line, giving the bet a 'C' grade.
Finally, TCU visits No. 24 Arizona at 10:15 p.m. ET. The Wildcats (6-2) seek to maintain their conference and CFP hopes against the Horned Frogs (4-4). TCU averages 23.3 points per game, ranking 101st in the country. However, TCU has the eighth-best scoring defense in the nation, allowing 14.1 points per game. Arizona has allowed only 34 points total in its last four home games. The SportsLine model predicts a 63.7% chance that the teams will combine for at least 47 points, assigning an 'A' grade to the over 46.5 line.
