Seven years after taking charge of booking the Super Bowl Halftime Show, Jay-Z has selected himself for the stage in Southern California. The rapper and business figure will perform at next year's showcase, according to reports from NPR and AP.
The timing lands on the 10-year anniversary of former NFL player Colin Kaepernick's kneeling protest, an action Jay-Z previously supported. That history is drawing attention from fans as the booking surfaces. Jay-Z has run the musical selection process for the event since 2019.
Michael Jeffries, a professor of American studies at Wellesley College and the author of four books about race, culture and politics, joins the discussion along with Angelika Beener, an award-winning journalist, DJ, producer and host of the podcast 'Milestones: Celebrating the Culture' from New Jersey's WBGO.
The Super Bowl halftime question sits inside a wider slate of stories this week. Sarah J. Maas' new novel 'A Court of Splintered Harmony' reached shelves for romantasy readers. Anthropic faces a lawsuit alleging it used Elvis Presley recordings to train its AI agents. British singer Raye won the Mercury Prize for 'This Music May Contain Hope.' An AI radio host speaking Spanish, which backs immigrants, is drawing listeners. Constance Wu shared new details on the 'Crazy Rich Asians' sequel, and a new season of 'Glee' is set for Disney+ and Hulu.
