WELLESLEY, Massachusetts. Christopher Morrow sank a short putt on the second playoff hole to win the Division 1 individual state golf championship on Sunday. The junior at Xaverian defeated teammate Michael McCormack and AJ Bodnar of St. John's Prep to claim the title. This marks the second consecutive year the Xaverian junior has won the individual state crown.
Morrow executed a strong drive followed by an approach shot that placed the ball a few feet from the cup. He then converted the putt to secure the victory. The junior said he knew he needed to get the ball high and close after his tee shot. "Then I had a good putt and that did it," Morrow said.
During the playoffs, Morrow and McCormack communicated frequently, offering tips to one another despite competing for the same prize. Morrow noted that their friendship helped manage the pressure of the moment. "It made it feel more like a regular high school match; it took some pressure off," he said.
McCormack, who had previously won the Cape National and South Sectional individual titles, focused on securing the team victory after finishing without the individual title. He stated that he wanted to avoid the guilt he felt last year when his personal performance did not contribute enough to the team win. "I just kept that in the back of my mind and I just didn't want to let my team down," McCormack said.
All three golfers in the playoff finished the regulation round even on the day. In the playoff, McCormack and Bodnar played one-over par while Morrow played even. Wesley Paine of Longmeadow finished fourth with a score of 72, which was one over par. Michael Rogers of Hingham placed fifth with a score of 73, two over par.
Xaverian captured the team championship with a cumulative score of 298, which was 14 over par. The Hawks finished 11 strokes ahead of St. John's Prep, which recorded a total of 309. Saint John's of Shrewsbury placed third with a score of 312. Coach Gerry Lambert said the team was expected to win but that executing under those expectations was the challenge. "For them to be able to manage that.. showed how they are able to just take one shot at a time and focus," Lambert said.
The Hawks achieved every goal set for the season. McCormack said the group entered the year knowing they were talented after winning every tournament except the Cape Cod National last season. "We had a very talented team and it was great to get it done," he said.
